Alsa balutan America Prod. puppeteers & director (1997, las cruces, new mexico). clockwise- kristina gordon, tessie greenfield, michelle fisher, victoria bradley (director) and linda fisher.  The group worked on the video only.

“alsa balutan” (in tagalog means “pack up and go” because the puppet shows were portable.)

way back in the philippines:

in the 1970’s, alsa balutan puppet group was founded by tessie ordona and david haguisan in manila with 15 puppeteers (many are in the photo below).  they performed from the slum areas & tenement houses to the five-star hotels.  they also conducted workshops.  they folded when most of the members immigrated to the us, germany & thailand.

Standing: didet de jesus, kim & marita Tengco (now mrs. stewart), meriam sy. second row: tessie ordona (greenfield), jessie dongallo (guest), & peachy gonzales (fernando).

foreground: prosy angeles (hennessy), beth vidanes (mahajcha-

riyawong), bidging azanza (ramos), alma tengco & cheryl chui.

the name “alsa balutan” was revived in 1997 in the united states adding “america” when the video “tales from the philippines” was produced. (see top photo on left column.)

in 2000, tessie, the puppeteer, decided to focus not only on philippine folktales but also asian and american themes. she changed the name to “kidstale-nm” based in new mexico.  she performs & conducts workshops solo.  on other projects, she was assisted by her husband (rand) and daughter (sima).  she has since produced a tv show “puppetnettes & friends (for a non profit tv channel 27, 2003), audio cd’s - “tales from the philippines vol. 2” and “tagalog for the soulmates” cd/booklet. in 2007, she wrote & produced the book/dvd: puppetnettes: philippines. see products for sale.  she continues to post her work on youtube (keyword: puppetnettes)

puppetnettes (from the words “PUPPET”& mario- “nettes”) was coined by her daughter. it is the ensemble of different puppets from kidstale-nm.
